Principle Solutions Engineer
The Company
Nomia helps companies reduce cost, manage risk, and increase efficiency for non-strategic third-party spend. We act as an extension of our customer's procurement team by executing the end-to-end sourcing, supplier onboarding and contracting process for indirect categories of spend.
We are focused on delivering an innovative and disruptive procurement solution to our customers to make managing non-strategic spend simpler, more transparent, and better value.
We are a global team based in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Dubai, Poland, and the United States.
Please note, Nomia operates on a hybrid model, with 3 days a week in the office, and 2 days a week working remotely.
The Role
As we scale, adding APIs, growing our teams and increasing the volume flowing through the platform, the Principal Solutions Engineer owns the architecture behind how we design and build across every engineering squad, and keeps the platform coherent, scalable and robust as a whole.
This is a hands-on, principal-level role. You set the technical direction across our teams and build the hardest parts yourself. We measure impact by decisions made, structure proven and working software shipped.
You’ll partner closely with Product to shape and de-risk new work, and work alongside our DevSecOps Engineer, who owns our infrastructure, environments and security. Together you’ll keep the platform fast, reliable and secure.
Responsibilities
Architecture and scale
Define and own the target architecture for our Azure-based platform, ensuring it remains scalable, resilient, maintainable and cost-effective as products, teams and transaction volumes grow.
Establish architectural standards, patterns and system boundaries that enable engineering teams to build consistently while minimising complexity and dependencies across the platform.
Design secure, highly available cloud solutions, making informed decisions across networking, compute, data, messaging, identity, disaster recovery and regional resilience.
Hands-on delivery
Lead the design, prototyping and first-pass implementation of new platform capabilities, validating architectural approaches before they are adopted by engineering teams.
Contribute hands-on across the technology stack, including application development, cloud services, infrastructure configuration, CI/CD pipelines and platform integrations.
Drive the evaluation and implementation of AI-enabled solutions, applying appropriate technologies and architectural patterns such as LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), embeddings and vector-based search where they add business value.
APIs and integration
Own API and integration architecture across the platform, ensuring secure, resilient and scalable designs with robust versioning, authentication, authorisation and governance standards.
Robustness, security and delivery
Define and champion performance, scalability, security and reliability standards, ensuring solutions are observable, supportable and ready for enterprise-scale operation.
Partner closely with engineering and DevSecOps teams to optimise deployment strategies, CI/CD practices and cloud environments, enabling safe and efficient software delivery.
Technical leadership
Act as a senior technical authority across the organisation, mentoring engineers and technical leads, guiding architectural decisions and translating emerging cloud and AI technologies into practical engineering solutions.
Requirements
Essential Criteria
8+ years of software engineering experience, with proven experience as a senior, staff or principal engineer, or platform/software architect, on a scaling SaaS platform. We’re looking for someone that can combine strong architectural and system-design skills with a proven track record of hands-on production coding and delivery.
Strong API and integration design: contract-first, versioning and backward compatibility, sync vs async, idempotency (handling duplicate requests safely).
A track record of making sound architecture decisions and seeing them through to working software.
Experience designing for scale on cloud infrastructure (Azure), with a practical grasp of what breaks first as systems grow - the data tier, statelessness, caching and its costs.
Fluent in modern delivery discipline: feature flags, percentage rollout, observability (Datadog or equivalent).
Strong TypeScript and Node.js (Nomia’s core stack) with hands-on experience in Next.js, GitHub, CI/CD and DevOps practices, including GitHub Actions and deployment pipelines integrating with Azure.
Excellent communication: able to set technical direction across teams, and to explain trade-offs clearly to non-specialist stakeholders.
Desirable Criteria
Workflow orchestration (Workato or similar) and ERP integration experience.
Exposure to AI / ML platform components, data pipelines, or event-sourced architectures.
Procurement, marketplace or B2B transaction-platform domain experience.
General Information
Adhere to Nomia's data protection and information security policies at all times.
Promote diversity and inclusion in line with Nomia's core values.
This is a hybrid role, with two office days per week required, potentially more during training or as requested by your supervisor.
Contribute to continuous improvement in systems and processes.
Please note that this role description is a guideline, and duties may evolve over time.
